Cassie Anderson, Eastern Tech, basketball - Baltimore Sun Article, February 2008 There's not much Eastern Tech guard Cassie Anderson cannot do on the basketball court. Averaging a double double (17 points and 12 rebounds) for the 12-4 Mavericks, the junior also averages four steals and two assists. She followed her older siblings - Ashley, 20, and Brian, 19 - into basketball, a sport her father, Bill Anderson, has coached at the youth level for years. Enrolled in the allied health program at Eastern Tech, she is considering a career in nursing or veterinary medicine. Two years ago, Anderson and her family escaped a fire that burned down their house. Although she doesn't like to talk about the details of the fire, which killed her dog, she said the family has recovered and is doing well. Has your whole family always been into sports? |

Yum! Cookbook Published!Eastern Tech High and Culinary Arts seniors are recognized in the cookbookBaltimore, MD, Thursday, December 20, 2007 – One year later, Yum! Cookbook is complete and published. Back in December 2006, Eastern Technical High School’s Culinary Arts juniors, now seniors, participated in the testing of recipes that were used in the cookbook . The Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF) selected Eastern Tech’s Culinary Arts program as one the best ProStart Culinary Arts programs in the state of Maryland to participate in this endeavor. Eastern Tech had the facility and the students to complete the testing. One year later, Eastern Tech’s former Culinary Instructor, Bette Mullins, and the twenty-two seniors were recognized by Public Relations Agent, Jeffrey Spear, for Microplane® and Dara Bunjon of Dara Does It – Creative Solutions for the Food Industry and a board member of Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF) for their efforts in the cookbook endeavor. On behalf of their hard work and weeks of testing recipes, each student and culinary instructor received a complimentary cookbook for their time and effort. The recognition took place at The Eastern Inn, Eastern Technical High School with Tom Evans, Principal, saying a few words on how proud he is in being a part of this program and school. Yum! is an excellent cookbook – hardbound with color photos of variety of the recipes. Additionally, there are some colored photos in the Appendix that display many of Eastern Tech’s students testing the recipes. This was an added bonus and surprise to all those involved. Ultimately, Yum! is a cookbook that is user-friendly for the every day person. The cookbook can be purchased in bookstores and online. The best place to get the cookbook is www.mhef.org. If you purchase the book from MHEF, half the proceeds will be given back to ProStart to provide scholarships to Culinary Arts students in the state of Maryland. For additional information on Microplane kitchen tools, consumers are welcome to visit the company’s Web site: www.microplane.com, or call toll-free 1-800-555-2767 or check out www.mhef.org to see more information about ProStart and the Culinary Arts programs in Maryland. |

Date: 11/1/07 AP Scholar Winners at Eastern Technical High School A total of 90 students at Eastern Technical High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit recognition of AP Scholar. Students took AP Exams in May 2007 after completing challenging college-level courses at Eastern Tech. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. At Eastern Tech, seven students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. 41 Eastern Tech students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. 22 Eastern Tech students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. An additional 20 Eastern Tech students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher. Of these award winners, 25 were Juniors when the tests were taken last May and will have further opportunity this year as Seniors to add to their award status. A breakfast to honor current AP Scholars, along with all students receiving straight A’s on their first quarter report, will be held at the school on November 19, 2007, at 8:30 am. |

Click here to see.Posted 4/23/07.Eastern Tech CADD Students Take First and Second at the ASHRAE CompetitionEastern Tech wins for the sixth time in the past seven yearsFebruary 21, 2007 - Eastern Technical High School Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) students participated at the Baltimore Chapter of the American Society of Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Engineers (ASHRAE) competition for the thirteenth year in a row. The competition requires students to work in teams to complete a variety of activities related to the industry. This year’s competition required the CADD students to complete in-depth calculations to determine various loads on a building, respond to a wide range of industry questions related to mechanical engineering, and complete a comprehensive layout and cost estimate for an air handling system for a portion of a building. Schools from three different counties participated and Eastern Tech had three teams entered on February 3, 2007 in Timonium, Maryland. The presentation of the awards was held on February 15 at the Engineering Society of Baltimore. Two of Eastern Tech’s teams placed first and second. The first place title was awarded to the team of juniors: Brad M., Ian J., and George H. The second place award was also given to a team of juniors from Eastern Tech: Amanda C., Collin S., and Caitlyn A. With guidance from their CADD teacher, Peter Glaudemans, these students allowed Eastern Tech to win the competition for the seventh time in the thirteen years of the competition. January 5, 2007 - ETHS Culinary students were featured in an article in the Baltimore Sun Papers on Jan. 5 for their participation in a cookbook production project for a charitable project. The project involved testing recipes for clear instruction and completeness, and included sampling those recipes. See the article in the Maryland section of the daily paper, or at www.baltimoresun.com for the complete story. September 20, 2006 - Governor Erlich visited Eastern Tech to congratulate students for their outstanding results on the most recent HSA battery of tests and the visit was covered in local papers. Our students achieved the following results on those test: 99.7% on the Biology Assessment, 99.1% on the Government Assessment, 95.9% on the Algebra/Data Analysis Assessment, and 88% on the English Assessment. April 24, 2006 - Congratulations to seniors Chris B.and Nick V. who won the state championship in the Ford/AAA Student Troubleshooting contest in the rain on Saturday! This award includes tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships and inclusion in the national competition in Dearborn, Michigan, in late June. The students' instructor, Mr. Watts, is due additional praise. This competition began in 1949 (when it was sponsored by Chrysler). In the 57 years that Maryland students have competed for this state title, no school had ever been Maryland State Champion for two consecutive years--until Saturday.
Additionally impressive was the fact that four of the ten judges overseeing the student teams' work were recent Eastern Tech grads who are enrolled at Automotive program at CCBC. (There was no impropriety--our team had a non-Eastern judge!) If you taught Ryan G., Martin P., Jason N. or Jack B., you'll be pleased to know that they are doing very well academically and professionally.
April 24, 2006 - CCBC at Dundalk sponsored the second annual County-Wide Crime Scene Investigation Competition a few weeks ago. The awards ceremony was held Friday night. Our team, coached by Tony Lalli and Mary Monte, earned an impressive second place finish. Congratulations to the coaches and the team: Shandi H. - captain, Jordan O., Jessica P., Britany R., Greg H., Katlyn McK. - alternate |
