Eastern Tech
teacher receives prestigious Presidential Award
TOWSON, MD.
(June 9, 2010) –
Kimberly Burton-Regulski, mathematics
department chair at Eastern Technical High School in Essex,
is the winner of a 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science Teaching – the second time in two
years that a Baltimore County educator has captured the
prestigious honor.
President Barack Obama on Monday, June 7,
named Burton-Regulski among 103 recipients of the national
award this year. The recognition goes to no more than two
educators per state, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, and U.S. Territories, each year.
According to
program organizers, the
award is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through
twelfth-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for
outstanding teaching in the United States.
“Teachers
like Ms. Burton-Regulski help to make Baltimore County
Public Schools the nationally-recognized school system that
it is,” said Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston. “Ms.
Burton-Regulski typifies the excellence we strive for
throughout our schools in Baltimore County, and we know that
her work
extends far beyond her classroom. Teachers of her skill and
talent help to strengthen our instructional program and
develop and retain new teachers. We are proud of Kimberly’s
achievement;
she is deserving of our admiration and our appreciation.”
As
a Presidential Award winner, Burton-Regulski will receive a
citation signed by President Obama, an expenses-paid trip
for two to Washington, D.C., for a White House awards
ceremony with the President and several days of educational
and celebratory activities, gifts from program sponsors from
around the country, and a $10,000 award from the National
Science Foundation. Winners are selected by a panel of
distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators
following an initial selection process at the state level.
Burton-Regulski was nominated by Eastern Principal Thomas
Evans and Assistant Principal Charlene DiMino. In his letter
of nomination, Evans wrote of Burton-Regulski, “She is a
leader of leaders in her department. . . . Her leadership
has enabled our school to hold the (top) position in
mathematics High School Assessment performance in the
Baltimore County Public Schools and to make consistent gains
in our Advanced Placement performance in Calculus,
Statistics, and Computer Science.”
A teacher
for 12 years, all of them at Eastern Technical High School,
Burton-Regulski is a product of Baltimore County Public
Schools. She graduated from
Loch Raven High School and
earned degrees from Towson University and Stevenson
University. “This
is a very special accomplishment for me,” she said upon
learning of the award. “I have always wanted to be a teacher
since I was a little girl. This award is a dream come
true.”
Enacted by Congress in 1983, the award program is
administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Since the program's inception in 1983, more than 3,900
outstanding teachers have been recognized for their
contributions to mathematics and science education.
Perfect Attendance Trio!
Carly Ordak, Danielle Spyridakos and Renee Yusuff graduated Tuesday from Eastern
Technical High School with perfect attendance records, having attended school
every day from kindergarten through 12th grade. They were the only students in
Baltimore County to graduate this year having done that.

"I think this is an incredible accomplishment," said Tom Evans, principal of
Eastern Tech. "It's amazing to me that there are only three and are all in one
school. But it's a tribute to our kids wanting to be here and wanting to do
well."

ETHS Senior students Ernest
Kuehne and Dan Sarzynski won the
Ford AAA Auto Skills State Championship on Saturday, May 8th. This is
the third consecutive state championship and the 5th in the last 6
years! They have each been given approximately $60,000 in scholarships.
Congratulations to both students, and their proud teacher Mr. Watts.

TOWSON, MD (May 13, 2010)
– Ernest Kuehne and Daniel Sarzynski from Eastern Technical High
School in Essex, Maryland in Baltimore County were crowned the top high school
auto technicians in Maryland after winning the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills
state finals on May 8. The team, led by
their instructor, Eldridge Watts, will represent Maryland in the National Finals
against teams from all 50 states.
This is the fifth
state championship for Eastern Technical within the last six years and the third
consecutive year that the school is heading to the National Finals. Last year
Eastern Technical High School earned a second place win at the national
competition.
After
taking an online exam earlier this year, the Eastern Technology High School
students were among 10 pairs whose high scores qualified them to advance to the
state finals. At the state finals, held at Community College of Baltimore
County/Catonsville campus, the students represented their school as a pair in a
race to correctly diagnosis and repair intentionally installed “bugs” on
vehicles. Each pair was judged on their speed, accuracy and workmanship.
“Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills energizes young people
about the great potential in the automotive technician profession and encourages
them to get the best training possible,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic’s
Delaware/Maryland Regional Manager for Roadside Assistance Operations, Glenn H.
Yarbrough. “The industry is constantly changing, and as vehicular technology
becomes increasingly complex, we need bright young minds to step up to help keep
drivers safe and our vehicles efficient. The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills
competition gives motivated students a chance to obtain the latest technical
training and opportunities to pay for it.”
Ernest Kuehne and Daniel Sarzynski and their
instructor, Eldridge Watts, will travel to Dearborn, Mich., to compete in the
Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Finals, June 13-15. During the National
Finals held on the front lawn of Ford World Headquarters, pairs of students
representing all 50 states will compete in a written test of their automotive
knowledge, and a hands-on competition similar to the state finals.
Eastern Tech Engineering Is
Among the Best!
Eastern Tech Engineering students participated in eight
competitions throughout the year. Their record is perfect. They won all eight
events. In January, several students participated in the annual wood bridge
challenge sponsored by the Baltimore Museum of Industry. This event required
students to construct a model bridge that had the greatest level of efficiency.
Junior Illya L. won the statewide event for Region II.
The Maryland Cargo Plane Challenge, sponsored by the
Baltimore Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA),
required teams of students to build a model plane from scratch that needed to be
tethered and was capable of supporting the greatest amount of weight while still
being able to fly. The team of Chris C., Saqlain A., Craig K., and Illya L. won
first place in this event.
Additionally, a national organization by the name of
Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) sponsors a number of
events to promote student interest in engineering. There were four events this
year that Eastern Tech students participated in. The first was Effective
Communication. Students had to prepare and execute a presentation on an
environmental topic. Chimaobidike I., Kiamsha B., Phil D., Katie S., and Kit K.
elected to argue the benefits of solar power as an environmental technology.
For their efforts, they won first place for the region and first place in the
state. The second competition was the Wood Bridge Challenge. Again, students
were required to develop a model bridge that was capable of having the highest
level of efficiency in terms of mass supported divided by the mass of the
bridge. This time, the team of Chris C., Courtney W., and Danielle N. won the
regional event. The third event was a Cargo Plane Challenge. Chris C., Illya
L., Saqlain A., and Craig K. repeated their performance from the AIAA event and
earned first place honors in the regional event and the state event. The last
MESA event students entered was the Wind Energy Challenge. This project
required students to construct a windmill that was capable of generating
electricity, lifting a weight within a designated period of time, and pulling a
model car a specified distance within time constraints. A written report and
presentation was also required for this project. Winning first place in the
regional competition and first place in the state competition were Sarah C.,
Noel D., Ron M., and Illya L. This event also has a national competition. The
students will be traveling to Denver, Colorado in late June to compete against
the winners from other states. These events were coordinated by their teacher,
Angela MacCubbin, the 2008 and 2009 MESA Teacher of the Year.
Another competition students entered was an annual design
competition sponsored by the Baltimore Chapter of the American Society of
Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This
competition required students to demonstrate an extensive knowledge of concepts
related to heat transfer, refrigeration, and industries related to MEP systems.
Chris C. Dan M. and Illya L. were recently recognized as the winners of this
event. It is the ninth time in the past ten years students from Eastern Tech
have won.
Lastly, there is an international design competition
sponsored by Bentley, a world leader in developing software solutions for
developing the world’s infrastructure. The competition required students to
develop a design for a “medical facility of the future” that was architecturally
sound, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally friendly. Seniors Karyn W.,
Sarah C., and Kiamsha B. developed a comprehensive solution for a rehabilitation
clinic. It is the fourth time in five years students from Eastern Tech have won
this international design challenge. Their teacher, Peter Glaudemans, was
selected as the BE Worldwide Educator of the Year for 2008.
